Good governance is fundamental to the work of the Malta Red Cross Society.

Legal Status

The Malta Red Cross Society is a non-profit, non-governmental voluntary organisation registered with the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations under registration number VO/0086.

The Society is established and recognised under the Malta Red Cross Society Act (Chapter 359 of the Laws of Malta), which affirms its legal personality, humanitarian mandate, and autonomous status as an auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field.

As a non-shareholding entity, Malta Red Cross has no owners, shareholders, or beneficial owners. All assets, resources, and activities are dedicated exclusively to the fulfilment of its humanitarian objectives.

National Board

Principal governing body of the Society.

The National Board serves as the principal governing body of the Malta Red Cross Society.

The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership, governance oversight, and institutional direction while safeguarding the Society's humanitarian mission, values, and long-term sustainability.

Its responsibilities include:

Setting strategic priorities and objectives
Overseeing governance and organisational performance
Ensuring sound financial stewardship
Approving key policies and governance frameworks
Supporting regulatory compliance and accountability
Safeguarding the interests and reputation of the Society

Board Members serve in a fiduciary capacity and act solely in the interests of the Malta Red Cross Society and the communities it serves.

Executive Leadership

Translating strategy into humanitarian action.

The operational leadership of the Malta Red Cross Society is entrusted to the Director General / CEO and the Executive Leadership Team.

The Director General / CEO is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organisation, implementation of strategic objectives, operational leadership, and legal representation of the Society in accordance with applicable legislation and governing instruments.

Working together with staff, volunteers, committees, and partners, the Director General / CEO ensures that the Society's humanitarian mission is translated into effective action, service delivery, and organisational development.

Financial Stewardship & Accountability

Responsible stewardship of every resource.

The Malta Red Cross Society is committed to responsible financial management and the effective stewardship of all resources entrusted to it.
