Our Origins
The story began in 1859 following the Battle of Solferino in northern Italy. Henri Dunant's simple yet revolutionary idea — helping people based solely on need — became the foundation of the world's largest humanitarian movement.
Henri Dunant witnesses the suffering left by battle and organises impartial care for the wounded.
Dunant publishes his call for voluntary relief societies to assist people during conflict.
A committee is established in Geneva, later becoming the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Protections for wounded soldiers, medical personnel, and humanitarian workers are established.
Our work combines operational capability, humanitarian values, and professional standards to deliver reliable, high-quality services across multiple sectors.
International Volunteering & Engagement
Malta Red Cross is a recognised and certified host organisation under the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), supporting international volunteers to contribute to humanitarian activities in Malta.
Through these programmes, individuals from abroad actively engage in emergency response, community support, and humanitarian initiatives, gaining valuable experience while contributing to meaningful impact.
This international engagement strengthens Malta Red Cross' role within the global humanitarian network while promoting collaboration, knowledge exchange, and shared humanitarian values across borders.
Legal and Ethical Framework
Malta Red Cross is recognised in law as a voluntary aid society and operates as an auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.

The Red Cross Emblem
The emblem serves as a protective symbol in armed conflict and as an indicative symbol identifying organisations within the Movement. Its use is strictly regulated to preserve its meaning and ensure continued protection.
Malta Red Cross is responsible for safeguarding the proper use of the emblem within Malta.
